The Island of Curacao.
Curacao is situated 12 degrees north of the equator in the Caribbean Sea. Curaçao is an island of 182 square miles. It is 38 miles long and on some places only 3 miles wide.
Curacao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Most of the inhabitants of Curacao speak different languages: Papiamento (Papiamentu, as we say on the island), Dutch, English or Spanish.
The island has a population of about 140,000 people. The population is very mixed: you will meet people of African origin, people originating from Surinam, China, Portugal, from South America, from Lebanon and from Europe. This is why the island has so much culture to offer. The capital Willemstad has an interesting history to tell. You can track back the colonial past in the beautiful historic centre of the town. On the island you will find numerous country houses on the former plantations. Often they are open for visitors.
The island has many beautiful beaches and secluded bays, which make the island very romantic.
The national nature reserve Christoffelpark is located on the west of the island and offers various opportunities for hiking. For instance to the top of the highest hill on the island: Mount Christoffel (374 m). From the top you’ll have a stunning view across the island.
Since the year of 1983 Curaçao has a protected underwater area: the Curacao Underwater Park. This park protects 12 miles of coral reef along the coast (in total 1500 acres). The Underwater Park offers many good diving spots.
The Climate
Curacao is in the tropics. The average temperature is therefore constantly high. The year average is 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit). The warmest period of the year is in august till October. January and February are the coolest months. The high temperatures are mitigated by the famous northeast trade winds. All in all the climate is very agreeable. It doesn’t rain much on the island. When it rains, it’s often a short but heavy downpour, usually in the early hours of the morning.
